British People Like Cookies, Too

This weekend, my grandmother came to the United States for the first time in almost twenty years! We used to visit her in Cornwall every summer, but she crossed the pond this time. We are so excited to have her here. Inspired, I brought a bit of the Brits to Cookie Magazine by featuring this sweet little cottage and the little dude who lives there. So cute! Makes me miss England and crave Dairy Milk.

When Modernists Correspond

My mom and I are a little obsessed with stationery. Every time she comes to visit, we spend half the day wandering around from stationery shop to stationery shop. One company I'm loving right now is Little Oranges of California. Their notecards are simple yet heartfelt. And I love their modernist sensibilities. Mama, you like?

Your future neurosurgeon.

Ladies and gentlemen, my brother-in-law Paul Kalanithi, photographed at last night's graduation banquet. Heehee, he is so funny and mustachioed. Congrats to Paul and Lucy as they graduate from med school this weekend! Woo hoo!

Art Opening on Thursday

One last thing, before I go...Thrust Gallery is having an art opening this Thursday by Cup-of-Jo favorite Sophy Naess. All the details are here. Come, will be fun!

Be back soon...

Like this studious-looking dude, I am swamped with work this week. Barg. Lucy and Paul are also graduating from med school this weekend (!), and my grandmother and aunt are flying over from England -- lots of excitement! So, my dear readers, I must take a short break from blogging. If you are in a curious mood, however, I warmly invite you to check out some archives, such as love-themed posts or people flying or this pretty polaroid. It's also fun to look at fun photos or hear a weird psychiatry story. At any rate, hope you have a wonderful week, and see you soon! xoxo

Have another cookie...

I've been really enjoying posting for Cookie -- if you'd like, please check out my recent posts spotlight on concert posters for mini hipsters and an artist's loft in Brooklyn. Cute!

Surprisingly lovely dress

I usually am not a fan of long, hippy-ish dresses, but this is really beautiful and would be nice for summer parties. Too bad it's a billion dollars.

Toadstools

Linen and wool toadstools. P.S. Do you like convertibles? My dad talks about them in this newspaper!

Janezic. Yes, Please.

I love the loose, easy, breezy look of clothing right now. And Janezic is no exception -- with playful shapes and lovely draping. I'd want to spend time with the naturally sexy, down-to-earth girls who wear these clothes.

Cookies and Such

Hope you had a lovely weekend! Apart from picnics and a ridiculously delicious dinner at Perry St., I spent time writing for Cookie's Nesting blog, which I'm so excited about. Here are the posts I've written so far...

1. Three iconic chairs that come in kid sizes.
2. A nature-inspired home in Portland.
3. Window drops.
4. Colorful mobiles.

I hope you like them! Please feel free to register (for free) on Cookie's site so you can comment on them--I would love you forever and ever.

Let's talk light

Last week, Alex and I took a walk around the West Village. We were gazing lustfully into the gorgeous apartments on 9th Street--crammed full of spiral staircases and working fireplaces and huge oil paintings. One apartment in particular caught our eye, mostly because of the beautiful bubble light hanging from the ceiling. We were awestruck. Take a look....
It's enormous! P.S. The icon pendant lamp (top photo) is also a favorite.

Alice Reads a Book

Photographer Alison Brady has an affectingly spooky exhibit right now at Massimo Audiello. Here's my favorite shot. She looks a little like Alice in Wonderland, post-puberty.

Bling

Carrying on our theme of literal jewelry design, here is a fun gold ring. What's not so fun is the price -- a whopping $380. Luckily for romantic pennypinchers, there is a $10 version as well.

Have a Cookie!

Anyone who knows me will tell you that two of the things I love most in this world are cookies and babies.

So I was thrilled when, a couple weeks ago, I was approached by Cookie Magazine to write for their website. For those who don't yet know, Cookie is an amazing magazine for young stylish moms. It has great illustrations, inspiring decor pieces, smart articles and a very funny sex column. I am so excited to be (at least a small) part of their team.

Breaking News: Jesse has a Spider

During our art meeting this morning, Bene's design director Jesse Alexander randomly revealed that he owns a Spider!!! So not only is he design director of Bene Magazine, art director of Tokion Magazine and the new husband of the beautiful Reika Yo, owner of EN Japanese Brasserie, but he also cruises around the city in a vintage Spider. Wow. I was overcome by his coolness. I could barely make it through the rest of the meeting.

Date with IKEA

Just when you thought the whole IKEA thing couldn't get any better, it goes and does. The Swedish company Bemz is now making lovely, wide ranging and (best of all) reasonably priced slip covers for IKEA's sofas and armchairs. I have an Ektorp chair that I'm suddenly inspired to spice up. Ah, Scandinavia, what will you think of next?

Halloween in Harlem

A few weeks ago, I saw a little boy rocking a Spiderman suit as he shopped with his mom. He might have appreciated this photography set "Halloween in Harlem" by Amy Stein. So cute. (via Swiss Miss)

Wallpapered books

These notebooks are hand covered with limited edition 1930's to 1970's wallpapers. Pretty!

I've never been to Albuquerque, but doesn't this photo make you want to go? Enjoy this sunny and beautiful weekend!

Getting dressed for a dinner party

The timeless question: What to wear? This Chambray shirt dress by Geren Ford would be lovely when drinking cocktails and laughing with your guests.

Shake it up, baby

My new brother-in-law Paul gave me these amazing salt and pepper shakers last Christmas. They rock back and forth but never tip over! Only a brain surgeon could find something that awesome.

My, what beautiful wine you have...

We've long been drawn to well designed wine bottles here on Cup of Jo. But the other night at Little Giant, I was blown away by the label of the wine they were pouring by the glass -- Mano a Mano from Spain. So graphic and striking! It added a really nice touch to the evening. Here are a few other beauties...
