Birthday picnic + family photos

For her husband's birthday, Elizabeth surprised him with a Central Park picnic. She decorated a bench in his honor, made a seven-layer chocolate cake from scratch, and brought along their sweet daughter and the family dog. Then she had an amazing photographer take family portraits, so they'd always remember the occasion. (Good thing her husband wore a cute outfit to work that day!) Isn't that an incredible and creative present?

Baby profiles

German photographer Bettina von Zwehl took this photo series of one-year-old babies at an instant of total (rare) concentration. Aren't they gorgeous? Von Zwehl used toys, dvds and eye contact to get the little guys to stay still. "They sat on a table, looking at me, and I took the picture with a long cable release," she says. Since many of the babes were still too wriggly to photograph, it took more than a year to get six final portraits. And the goal of the project? "I was hoping to present each baby as an intelligent human being," she says.

P.S. Baby mouths are so adorable.

Very Happy Nine-Month News...

My sweet darling readers, it's with great excitement that I announce that Alex and I are expecting our first child! It's our little honeymoon miracle (a very welcome surprise) and we are absolutely over the moon. I'm four months along (it's been almost impossible to keep quiet; I have been dying to tell you!), and my belly is slowly but surely expanding. Our babe is growing fast and furiously and is now the size of an avocado! We can't wait to welcome this little person into the world and give him or her lots of hugs, smooches and tummy rubs. xoxo

P.S. Thank you so much for putting up with my many, many baby fever posts over the past two years!

Afternoon in Brooklyn

Yesterday, I played hooky in the late afternoon, so I could ride my trusty bike to Brooklyn and hang out with these two lovely ladies. We had a wonderful long chat, and one of us got a lot of tummy rubs. Thank you, L & E!

(P.S. Seriously, look at those cheeks.)

Jesse and Whitney: "Our Secrets to a Happy Marriage"

Here's the good stuff in a nutshell:

    * We step away from our routines: a walk, a picnic, a trip, a day outing.
    * Drinking coffee together. (We met at a coffee shop!)
    * I'm a sucker for his foot rubs.
    * Dinners made with love.
    * We try to clearly define work time and us time. (That's a tough one.)
    * He gives me space for yoga and massages.
    * We always get hooked on the latest HBO mini series.
    * Family walks, with two pugs and one cute boy.
    * Shared interests are important. It's the transformation of these interests into reality that sustains us.

Unemployment Olympics

When my little brother Nick got laid off in February, he wanted to spend time outside with cool people. So he had a madcap idea: Why not hold an Unemployment Olympics? It would be fun and help bring cheer to a tough situation.

Nick made a website, got press, and even went on TV to spread the word. (He did this all on his own without asking for any help--my family was gobsmacked!)

Yesterday was the big day, when a huge crowd of unemployed New Yorkers came to an East Village park to run in a "You're Fired Race," play "Pin the Blame on the Boss" and "Office Phone Skee Ball," and smash a pinata full of PayDay candy bars.

Congratulations, Nick, yesterday was awesome! I'm so amazed by you! Read about it in today's New York Times and Gothamist and other papers; plus, adorable interviews in Time Out and (on video) CNN, the Associated Press and Time Magazine. I'm a very proud (and giggling) big sis!Source URL: https://ledger-heath.blogspot.com/search/label/family
