I did not see this one coming whatsoever, but it appears to be true... but wait a second...
Uh oh. Stephen A.!? Consider me skeptical at this point just because of that element, but it doesn't seem out of character for either franchise. It's a lateral or negative move for both teams, but they both needed to make SOME kind of move. The Pistons seem to make out pretty well just because clearing out Antonio McDyess will loosen up the power forward spot for some of the young guns. The Nuggets are more than just one player away (as evidenced by the failures with Iverson), so I wonder why they didn't target someone younger than Billups. Then again, this is the team that gave big money to Nene and traded Marcus Camby for basically nothing.
***UPDATE***
So, everyone is reporting this story, and now I see Dumars' move more clearly- he gets Iverson's contract off the books to make a run at the 2010 class of free agents. That makes a lot more sense, because the idea of Iverson waiting to set up Rip Hamilton off of screens is ludicrous. This will be a weird year to watch the Pistons, but once Iverson's gone they'll be in great position... plus, Stucky is legit and he will quite easily step into the starting spot once Iverson's gone. As for the Nuggets, they weren't going to re-sign Iverson (for obvious reasons) and Billups/McDyess is probably (easily?) the best package they could have received. So, good move for them, too, even though the Nuggets are still a mess.Source URL: http://ledger-heath.blogspot.com/2008/11/iverson-for-billups.html

The Pistons have reached an agreement in principle with the Denver Nuggets to acquire guard Allen Iverson in exchange for Detroit mainstays Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess, club sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.
