Doc Rivers: Player's Coach

The Celtics are an undefeated 2-0 when Doc Rivers doesn't coach this year. But he's only missed one game you say? Check out the following video clip of a Celtics' timeout, and you will know what I mean by "doesn't coach":

That really is the saddest thing I've ever seen. Is it just me, or does Doc appear to be as comfortable in the huddle as a Knicks intern in in a carful of Marburys? Look closely at the video. KG actually coaches the team (suggesting they slow it down and run pick-and-rolls and shift on defense to prevent the other team from running them), while Doc appears to wave to Scal, counts players standing in front of him, stares off into space for 10 seconds, and then urges the team "keep moving the ball, we gotta keep moving the ball". Of course the whole time the entire team ignores Doc, and pays its undivided attention to KG.

In a way, this makes me very happy. KG is clearly an intelligent, charismatic leader, and that is something I have never really seen on the Celtics. On the other hand, Doc is, based on this unfairly small sample of "in-the-huddle" footage and an unfairly large sample of entire seasons of terrible coaching, an incompetant coach. I mean, even Chap and Nic's dad had more strategicly viable coaching advice for us in our 7th grade rec league, and the only phrase he ever uttered, regardless of our location on the court, was an enthusiastic "Shoot it!"
